SEATTLE
1786?-1866
Son père, Schweabe, était un noble Suquamish de Agate Pass et sa mère, Sholitza, était Duwamish de lower Green River. D'après certains chercheurs il serait né en 1786 à Blake Island, une petite île au sud de Brainbridge Island, pendant les terribles épidémies, héritage des pionniers blancs, qu'anéantissaient les populations indigènes.
Quand il avait 20 - 25 ans Seattle est nommé chef de six tribus, titre que lui fut reconnu jusqu'à sa mort.
Après la mort d'un de ses fils (d'un second mariage, sa première femme meurt à la naissance de leur fille Angelina), il est baptisé par l'église catholique, probablement par des pères oblats (dans les registres il est inscrit comme Noë Siattle) Ses autres enfants furent également baptisés.
Seattle est le porte-parole pendant les négociations (commencées en 1854) et le signataire avec d'autres chefs indiens, du traité de paix de Point Elliott - Mukilteo (1855) que cédait 2.5 millions d'acres de terre au gouvernement des Etats Unis et délimitait le territoire d'une réserve pour les Suquamish.
